Breast Health Education in Action: Fulton County Health Department’s Creative Breast Health Outreach

We’re always inspired by the creative ways our partners use Know Your Lemons materials to educate their communities—and the Fulton County Health Department in Illinois is a shining example of going above and beyond!

We recently had the pleasure of connecting with Paige from the health department, a Certified Breast Health Educator, to learn more about their innovative efforts. From pink flags on golf courses to mirror clings in boutique dressing rooms, Fulton County is turning heads (and saving lives) with breast health education.

Here are a few highlights of their incredible work:

📊 Community Reach

Each year, an estimated 2,000 people access Fulton County Health Department programs that offer Know Your Lemons education. This includes their energy assistance, environmental health, and women’s/maternal health programs—each serving a broad cross-section of the community.

On social media, the department reached an impressive 63,557 people via their Facebook presence over the past year! While Facebook is currently their only platform, their content is also shared on three local community pages to further amplify their message.

📌 Know Your Lemons Materials in Action

The Know Your Lemons 12 Signs of Breast Cancer wallet cards are prominently displayed in six office locations, and posters grace their clinic waiting room and front hallway. These visuals are also featured at all five medical clinics in the county, the local hospital, and the two neighboring health departments they oversee as the lead agency for the Illinois Breast & Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP).

💛 Outreach That Stands Out

Their commitment doesn’t stop at the clinic doors. Fulton County has purchased and distributed a wide array of Know Your Lemons materials, including:

They’ve also gotten creative with community partnerships. During a Mother’s Day weekend event at a local golf course, the team set up a Know Your Lemons display, hosted a booth to talk with visitors, and even adorned the 12th hole with a pink flag and sign. Some years, the course’s restaurant joins in by offering lemon-themed food and drinks!

A Note of Thanks

We’re deeply grateful for Fulton County Health Department’s partnership and creativity. By bringing Know Your Lemons materials into both traditional and unexpected spaces, they are making breast health education visible, accessible, and empowering.
