Miroslava’s Journey: Partnering Amazonky and Know Your Lemons in Slovakia

A Diagnosis That Sparked a Calling

Just over a year ago, Miroslava Schönborg heard the words: you have breast cancer. It was a turning point in her life. With 15 years of experience in corporate marketing, she had built a career she loved, but her diagnosis opened her eyes to a new purpose.

As she went through treatment and recovery, Miroslava (Mirka) searched online for information and connection. That’s when she came across the Know Your Lemons video and was drawn to its creative, accessible approach to breast health education. She soon became an Ambassador, completed our educator course, and began using her professional skills to share life-saving information in ways that resonate with others.

“I realized that helping people in turn helped me as I was going through treatment and recovery,” Mirka says. “It felt like I had truly found my calling.”

Discovering Amazonky

Miroslava also connected with Amazonky -  Europa Donna Slovakia, a nonprofit in Slovakia founded in 2013 that started as a peer-to-peer support group, but in the past few years it turned into a strong player in the patient advocacy on the national level and also started to make a lot of breast cancer awareness activities and events, teaching women about early signs of breast cancer and how to self-exam.

For Mirka, Amazonky became both a source of strength and a platform where she could apply her passion for communication and education.

“THIS was the moment I realized that we should combine Amazonky and Know Your Lemons!”

Where Two Missions Meet

It wasn’t long before Mirka saw an opportunity to connect her two worlds—Know Your Lemons and Amazonky. By combining Amazonky’s strong national presence with the education tools of Know Your Lemons, she could help Slovak women access life-saving education in their own language.

Her first major contribution was  translating Know Your Lemons materials into Slovak—including the 12 Signs of Breast Cancer image—with her team at Amazonky, so more women can recognize the symptoms and feel confident taking action.

“Education only works if people can truly understand it,” Mirka explains.

Amazonky is also creating a dedicated page about Know Your Lemons on their website and launching local trainings, with Mirka’s helping to prepare volunteers to share the early detection message in their communities.

Looking Ahead Together

With upcoming trainings, events, and new educational resources on the horizon, Mirka is helping to grow a movement that extends far beyond her own story. Her transition from marketing professional to breast health advocate shows the power of turning personal experience into community impact.

For Know Your Lemons, working alongside Amazonky means more women will have access to education that can save lives. And for Mirka, it means transforming her journey with breast cancer into a mission of hope, empowerment, and early detection for women across Slovakia.
